Student Audience

As the ELC/PC Library Media Specialist (aka Library Teacher), I am responsible for library skills instruction for children in grades K-2. According to our Report Card from DPI, in 2011-2012, the Primary Center enrolled 363 students in grades 1 and 2. Our demographics were presented as 91.2% white, non-Hispanic with representation from many other race and ethnic groups. Our defined student groups showed 12.1% with disabilities, 18.7% economically disadvantaged, and 0.8% with limited English proficiency. Although student data is available through this and other resources, it does not give a complete picture of the many small individuals with whom I work. They come in all shapes and sizes, from all types of families, and from all types of circumstances. Data can never tell me who is shy and who is bold, or who would rather read facts about cats than read "Bad Kitty".

In this, and other courses, when asked to create content for for my students, I generally have my grade 2 students in mind. My Multi-Age classrooms often receive the grade 2 instruction as well. There are 7 sections of the former and 2 sections of the latter, totaling about 200 students. They are generally 7 and 8 years old, although the younger multi-agers often begin the school year as 6-year olds.
