"Toolbox" Project

Throughout the course we were encouraged to explore and integrate web 2.0 tools into our (real or imagined) online course. These tools can be used by us or by our students as a way to help assess student learning.

I chose to focus on my Grade Two students who come to the library once a week for "Library Class". My students come to the library once a week for 30 minutes. Often we read share stories during the first portion of our time, followed by 10-15 minutes for browsing, checkout and enjoying books with friends. From time to time, there are library skills lessons as well. The goal is independence in the library: getting from an idea in my young patron's mind to a physical book my young patron's hand. There are many more steps involved in this than most adults realize because we are often fluent library users.

I begin library skills lessons in October with my second graders, and that is where I chose to focus my efforts for this project. Module II (October on our academic calendar) includes four lessons. Each includes an objective, an activity, and a method of assessment. Each lesson includes one web 2.0 tool that I first encountered or that I learned to apply to my classroom during the last few weeks. These tools are discussed on the Objectives pages and listed separately under Technology Tools in the sidebar at left. Also listed there are tools that I use quite often and that I found helpful in crafting this website.

This class, my classmates, and this project have been a great help to me as I have considered the instructional portion of my Grade Two Library classes. The lessons are much more robust than they were previously. The introduction of web 2.0 tools enriches the student's learning through collaboration with peers and through interaction with the material. I am very pleased with the new and improved lessons in Module II.
